2013 March for Life Washington

Over the weekend around 650,000 people braved frigid temperatures and converged in Washington DC for the annual “March for Life.”  The crowd at his year’s rally was larger than the same rally last year by about a quarter million people.

This year’s event marked the 40th anniversary of the infamous 1973 Roe vs Wade Supreme Court ruling that has allowed abortion to be carried out in the US ever since.  In the time since the Roe vs Wade ruling an estimated 55 million babies have been aborted in the US.

A round of speeches was given on Friday by various speakers including former Senator and Presidential candidate Rick Santorum and Kentucky Senator Rand Paul.  Santorum spoke of his daughter Bella who was born with Trisomy 18 – a genetic disorder caused by the presence of all or part of an extra 18th chromosome.  He said that doctors and others tried to convince him and his wife Karen to have an abortion after the disorder was discovered in the womb.  Santorum urged people to “give these poor children a chance.”

March for Life 2013Senator Paul spoke of our civilization being in need of a “moral compass.”  He went on to say that our nation is in need of “spiritual revival and cleansing.”

After the speeches the crowd marched through DC to the steps of the Supreme Court building.

Jennifer Mauney (pictured left) – a young grass-roots activist and State Editor for The North Carolina Conservative Dot Net traveled up with her sister for the event.  Jennifer has a younger brother who was born with some serious health problems and special needs.  She said that, “I attended March for Life because I wanted to be a voice for the voiceless and stand up for those who aren’t able to stand up for themselves.  I wanted to make a statement that I will never stop fighting to end abortion.  It was an incredible experience to stand shoulder to shoulder with so many passionately pro-life people – many of whom were born after 1973.  We are the generation who survived Roe vs. Wade and we are the generation who will end it for good.  I am more inspired and hopeful than ever to keep fighting for life after attending March for Life.”

According to recent national polling, a clear majority of Americans remain pro-life.  It seems that at least for now the issue of life may be making a resurgence back into public dialogue, and that the issue is far from settled as far as millions of Americans are concered.
